I figured out the "twist" fairly early on, so for me it was just a matter of trying to figure out "why" they were doing what they were doing. Which made it a far less interesting/exciting experience I'm sure then if I would have gotten to experience a surprise twist towards the end of a film.

Visually it was GREAT and I think it is a nice homage to some of the "old fashioned" _b_styles of film making which Scorcese obviously loves and respects.

DiCaprio usually comes across to me as a boy dressed up in grown-up clothes, but I felt less of that this time around and was actually pretty impressed with him here.

Ruffalo was surprisingly forgetable in his supporting role, but perhaps that was the goal?

Kingsley steals the show as the ominous Dr. Cawley. And both Michelle Williams and Patricia Clarkson impress to spite their limited screen time.

An enjoyable little mystery, provided you don't think about it too much. Just try to sit back and let it unfold on its own and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I recently read the book series (out of boredom), so I saw this film today with my friend. Firstly, it is quite different from the book. A major part of the storyline was completely left out (or even discarded), some parts were removed, and random parts added that did nothing for the storyline whatsoever. The beginning of the movie felt rather rushed, and hearing the 'whhaat?' from my friend confirmed the fact that they don't really explain things much in the first place. Anyone who might've recently studied Greek mythology or like to read about it as a general interest..it might make more sense to. Otherwise, it would seem a little random.

I'm never impressed when movies make changes from the books that don't greatly benefit the storyline. Unfortunately this was the case, with several things being completely different. But, if you've not read the books, you won't know any better. Still, I think keeping with the original storyline would've been fine, and definitely wouldn't have made the movie longer if done properly.

I honestly thought the acting was excellent from all of them, and there are quite a few laughs along the way.

It wasn't great, but it wasn't bad either. It should've been better. I doubt they'll continue to make the other books into movies, much like they've completely botched the movie versions of my favourite books (His Dark Materials), but considering a major part of the plot was removed, it doesn't really matter much.

    REVIEW
More than appreciating Tim Burton's visually stunning sequel to Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, I couldn't stop thinking how perfectly Johnny Depp plays the Mad Hatter: The infamous character is clearly disturbed but a good heart dedicated to stopping the bad heart, big-headed Red Queen, played with relish by Helena Bonham Carter. Depp is one actor who could do six impossible things before breakfast.

As arguably the most versatile actor in film, Depp almost always is superior, so my thoughts run to how an actor is the embodiment of a film, in this case the eccentric Hatter as the center of imagination and iconoclasm, just what Carroll ordered for his anti-establishment cartoon lampooning Victorian society and ushering in the age of individualism.

The tea party is still there with the March Hare (Paul Whitehouse) and Dormouse (Babs Windsor), but it's less whimsical and more morbid than in Carroll. Alice in Wonderland loses the original's innocence as the film moves to the unoriginal conclusion with its dragon Jabberwocky (Christopher Lee) no different from scores of other dragons in other fantasies. Even Alice's (Mia Wasikowski) heroics are derivative. As always Alan Rickman's voice has the ability to mesmerize, this time as the slow but effective blue caterpillar Absolem.

Burton has put all his weird makeup and love of bizarre characters into this film, which more than any of his other fantasies such as Edward Scissorhands and Corpse Bride echoes the epic struggles of good and evil in most kiddie, young adult, and cheesy romances over the ages.

Kind a cross between Clash of the Titans and Beverly Hills 90210. One moment our hero is battling the 9 headed hydra (that's good), another he is dancing to Lady GaGa in a Las Vegas casino (that's bad). Schizophrenic mess of a film has a couple bright spots. Uma Thurman's performance of Medusa, a variation of her own Poison Ivy character in Batman and Robin, is entertaining. Actor Brandon T. Jackson's satyr is kind of amusing as well, but the main hero is completely forgettable and the action is too reliant on unnecessary special effects. Younger viewers may find the myriad of mythical creatures interesting, but older viewers will most likely react to this children's fantasy with a "Been there, done that" attitude. Film is an adaptation of the first novel in the series by Rick Riordan.
