    No one else in the audience when I watched this laughed out loud at the opening scene except me. Following the opening credits Bad Blake pulls his truck into a bowling alley parking lot to prepare for a gig. Especially since I just recently watched Jeff Bridges' iconic performa...( read more)nce in The Big Lebowski, I thought this was a excellent start to the movie. With T-Bone Burnett's touch the music is great as expected. Bad's romance with Gyllenhaal's character Jean is nice, but it is her son Buddy and the effect the boy has on turning Bad's life around that is the most special part of this story.

With tender strokes and a warmth that makes it so inviting, its t...( read more)he kind of film that embraces the viewer, holds onto us, and lets us know that everything is going to turn out ok. We may be witnessing a man playing the same record over and over, but what we are also witnessing is the man finding the push to put on something new; to find a nudge to restart his love, and his life. Jeff Bridges gives his character this magnetic quality - we may never agree with Bad Blake, but we are there to look out for him. It isn't so much Bridges playing a country music star, as it is Bridges playing music. The man gives something that almost transcends itself into art.

    Bridges gives an ...( read more)Oscar-worthy performance as washed-up, alcoholic C&W singer Bad Blake, whose attempt at a much-needed comeback has some pitfalls along the way to sobriety and redemption: namely a budding journalist years younger paramour (Gyllenhaal spot-on perfect as usual) whose love affair proves to be the better for the couple in the long run in spite of its rocky road. First time filmmaker Scott Cooper ? who also adapted the Thomas Cobb novel ? allows his star a tailor-made vehicle to really sink his teeth into such a meaty character ? and Bridges rises to the occasion beautifully (and points for taking on the task of composing original songs to sing and produced by wunderkind T.Bone Burnett). A real indie gem diamond in the rough.

    bridges is getting a lot of hype for his performance, and its deserved because it might legitimately be the best performance of 2009, but the rest of the film is being ignored entirely too much. the movie is just flat out excellent. a rugged and penetrating story, this film hol...( read more)ds its own among the heavy dose of both factual and fictional biopics released in the past decade. im not even a big fan of country and the soundtrack impressed me quite a bit, and the story stands out as one worth telling. a wonderful film.

    A story of a worn/torn alpha-male, musk worn off, trying to do a little house work (in the vein of "The Wrestler"). Somewhat safe, somewhat mute, but also well-acted and pretty well scored. The minuses may win out here, but the pluses give them a decent run for their money.
