Julie Andrews was born Julia Elizabeth Wells on October 1, 1935 in Walton-on-Thames, England. Julie has said in her memoir that her family grew up poor, and that her stepfather was an alcoholic. Her parents discovered she had an amazing singing voice, and her stepfather paid lessons for Julie. At the age of 14, Julie learned that the man that she thought was her father was in fact not. Her mother had an affair with a family friend. Julie began making a name for herself when she appeared in the broadway production of "The Boyfriend" when she was only 19. She then went on and did stage productions of "My Fair Lady" and "Camelot". At 20, she starred in a TV movie musical version of "Cinderella".
Julie then got the role of a time playing the lead role in the Walt Disney film "Mary Poppins". She originally declined, because of a pregnancy, but Disney waited for her. And it paid off. Julie won an Oscar for her performance. Following her win, she appeared in the film "The Americanization of Emily"alongside James Garner, and "The Sound of Music", which she was nominated for an second Oscar. Julie gained an Emmy nomination after appearing on the variety show "The Andy Williams show". Julie then starred in her very own special "The Julie Andrews show" which aired in November 1965. Following that, Julie went back to the stage, to reprise her role as Eliza Doolittle in the play "My Fair Lady". In 1972- 1973, Julie starred in her variety show "The Julie Andrews hour". The show won 7 Emmy Awards. In 1981, she appeared in Blake Edwards's "S.O.B", where she bared her breasts. And in 1982, she starred in "Victor/Victoria", playing woman playing a man playing a woman. The role earned her a Golden Globe nomination. She continued acting throughout the 1980s and 1990s in movies and TV, hosting several specials and starring in a short-lived sitcom. In 1995, Julie returned to Broadway, where she starred in the stage version of "Victor/Victoria". Julie soon after had to give up Broadway, after a surgery damaged her vocal chords, making her unable to sing like she could. In 2000, Julie was made a Dame. In 2001, Julie had a career revival appearing in the Disney film "The Princess Diaries", as the Queen of Genovia (a fictional country). She also appeared in the sequel "The Princess Diaries 2 ; Royal Engagment". Julie sang for the first time, since her surgery in that film. Julie continued her work with Disney by appearing the movies "Eloise at the Plaza" and "Eloise at Christmastime". In 2004, Julie was the voice for Queen Lillian in "Shrek 2", and reprised her role in "Shrek the Third". In 2007, she narrated the film "Enchanted". In that same year, she was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the SAG Awards. On November 25, 2009, it was announced that Julie will be singing in a concert at The O2 Arena (London) on May 8, 2010.
Julie was married to Tony Walton on May 10 1959. They have one child together, Emma Katherine Walton. Her and Tony divorced in 1967. She re-married on November 12, 1969 to Blake Edwards. The two adopted two children together Joanna and Amy, and Julie became a step-mother to Blake's children from a previousrelationship, Geoffrey and Jennifer. Jule is now a Great-Grandmother. In her spare time, Julie also writes. She has published 23 books, the majority being childrens books, her daughter Emma illustrates them.
